Camps in Masai Mara:
A traditional camp, situated on private land on the eastern edge of the Maasai Mara Reserve, surrounded by fabulous indigenous trees overhanging the Olare Orok River. Approximately one kilometer from the reserve. Speke's Camp is bordered by Mara North Conservancy and Olare Orok Conservancy. All our game drives are done inside the reserve.
Relax in camp our large, comfortable mess tent. Learn about Kenyan history, safaris, and the animal kingdom as there are many books to keep you occupied. The new 'chill out' tent with Wi-Fi overlooks in the river and is perfect to enjoy the serenity and peace of this enchanting spot. We have nine beautifully appointed safari tents, all are en suite with flushing toilets & traditional safari bucket showers. Two large family pods, perfect for a family getaway or larger groups.
We love our food here at Spekes! We aim to make wholesome, delicious, 'home away home' food! All our meals are served in the shade of ancient trees overlooking the wonderful Mara wilderness or under the starry sky! We cater for all food types, and we promise you'll be asking for 'seconds' with every meal! If you decide to take a full day game drive, you won't miss out of the goodies. You can choose to have a bush breakfast overlooking the plains or have a picnic lunch out in the bush as to not miss out on any of the action! We also have a great little bar in the mess tent, where you can grab a cool drink at the end of the day, sit around the campfire and share stories.
Our Maasai guides will come to meet and greet you before the trail begins. You will talk through your upcoming trail. The pack donkeys will be brought in from nearby endings on your first day’s walk; the equipment will be weighed, measured and packed in preparation for your foot safari.
Once all the provisions and camp equipment have been packed, the donkey caravan will set off into the forest to set up the next camp.
Due to the altitude of the Loita area and the terrain that we traverse, we do not plan to walk for longer than 6 hours a day. Within very short distances you can walk through very different ecosystems and habitats.
Normally the walks are three hours in the morning, stop for a leisurely lunch then a further three hours in the afternoon.
Speke's Camp is a return to the traditional safari camp, designed with privacy, nature and the surrounding Riverside and plains in mind.
