Nestling against the Swartberg Mountains, it grew from a farm called Kweekvallei which was established in 1762 on the banks of a river whose source is from the sparkling springs in the Swartberg Mountains. The life-giving water was used to good effect to create an oasis in the otherwise dry Great Karoo.
