The town of Kleinmond is within the buffer zone of the first UNESCO declared Biosphere Reserve in Southern Africa. Blinkwater holiday flat nestles between the towering mountain (lushly covered with the world famous Cape fynbos) and the sea where the rocky coastline is 100m in front. Nearby is the Palmiet River and the Palmiet beach which can be reached after an 800 yard leisurely stroll through the Kleinmond nature reserve, along a picturesque boardwalk gently sloping over rocks and shrubbery, whisking one effortlessly through nature. In the other direction, towards the left as you face the sea, 350 yards away, lies the little harbour for small fishing vessels that merrily hum into the bay in the mornings, and wearily return later, midst noisy shrieking seagulls, begging for a titbit to come their way.
This sets the stage for a wonderful relaxing stay, close to nature, close to the locals, close to the local curio shops in picturesque Harbour Road and numerous relaxing activities, close to restaurants and pubs, but also close enough to slip away to larger places like Hermanus, Cape Town Waterfront, Caledon Casino, Strand/Gordon's Bay or the Stellenbosch Wine Routes.
A visit to the penguin colony is very interesting - this is one of only two shore based breeding colonies of the African penguin. At the Rooisand nature reserve, just outside town, you can see not only various aquatic birds, but also the famous Kleinmond wild horses. The herd, which roams the flats of the estuary, comprises the descendants of horses that were abandoned after the Anglo-Boer War. They are feral but certainly not wild. There is ample grazing, including the succulent water grasses in the vlei, and green shoots everywhere.
Sport lovers are amply catered for in Kleinmond. There is a beautiful 9 hole golf course. Tennis, Bowls and Jukskei and many well described mountain walks / hikes are available. Arabella and Hermanus championship golf courses are a short drive away.
