Nestled in the extreme southwestern corner of Uganda, dotted with 29 islands and overlooked by rolling hills where local farmers grow their crops on steep terraces, Lake Bunyoni is one of Uganda's most picturesque locations. Lake Bunyonyi also offers an excellent option for a little R & R after gorilla trekking in the nearby Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
Buffet breakfast is served daily. Local and continental meals are also provided through the onsite restaurant. Wines, beers and whiskies are available at the fully stocked onsite bar. At the preeminent terrace, guests can request for a quixotic candlelight dinner with unobstructed views of the Lake from beneath.
The lodge offers a 25-seater motor launch, ideal for taking in the lake and its islands during daytime tours or watching the stars on the night-time Stargazing tour. The Lodge offers two high-end Bombardier Jet skis available for hire, as well as four Honda quad-bikes to explore the muddy tracks along the lake-shore. The premises are guarded by security personnel and onsite parking is available.
The name of the lake translates as the 'place of little birds' and it is indeed blessed with some 200 bird species including several varieties of weavers that nest by the lakeshore and on the many islands. It is also probably the best place in Uganda to spot otters.
The lake is rumoured to be up to 900m deep in parts, though this has never been properly confirmed. If true, it would make Lake Bunyonyi the second deepest lake on the continent, with only Lake Tanganyika exceeding it.
Lake Bunyonyi is a stone throw away from the lodge.
