Not sure about the backpackers side. If you book the little house with private bathroom, don't expect a spotless place. At all. Plus, going up to the house, you have to go through a disgusting stench. I leave that to your imagination. At night, music till late, fight and swearing between guests. Beautiful view, however. Awesome place, awesome vibe, awesome hosts. We really enjoyed our stay there! We arrived after the shops closed so the hosts arranged charcoal, braai meat etc for us which was great!Just watch out for the speed bumps going into Port St Johns itself, they are dangerous and not marked at all!

We really had a fantastic time at Amapondo, the hospitality and humbleness from the staff esp Siya and Busi was great including the Tour Guiders. We enjoyed the daily activities alot,my 10yr old son and 6yr old nephew had so much fun, my 68yr mom and 25yr sister really enjoyed themselves. Im definately coming back with my age group next time around.
